Sherwood EMM Limited is a new high purity Manganese project for the battery industry, located in South Africa (Northern Cape province), with an expected capacity of 40,000 mt per year of high purity manganese products (Mn contained) by 2027 (subject to final laboratory tests, the plant construction will start in Q4 2023). The CAPEX is around US$200 million.
The company benefits from a captive Mn ore mine: Kitso Mining (Pty) Limited (Lohatlha, Northern Cape province, around 1.0 million wet mt of capacity of medium grade Mn ore with high iron content). This mine is the former Lohatlha mine owned by Samancor until 2007, which mostly sells to China and has a reserve of more than 70 million tons.
Sherwood EMM Limited will have a low environmental footprint, as the company benefits from captive solar power production, minimal feedstock logistics due to proximity of available unprocessed Mn fines, and on-site production of most reagents for the process to produce high purity Manganese products.
Sherwood EMM is a member of the Chemical Products Division of the International Manganese Institute.
