Scope 3 GHG Emissions

Stakeholders in the manganese value chain are increasingly focused on tracking greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 to comprehensively evaluate the environmental impact of manganese-based products. Scope 3 emissions, which occur outside a company’s direct operations, often represent up to 95% of total emissions in the mining sector. For manganese miners, smelters, and refiners, significant downstream emissions come from industrial applications like steel production, batteries, and other manganese-based products, while upstream inputs for mining and smelting also contribute substantially to carbon footprints.

Building on ICMM’s standardized Scope 3 guidance, this framework equips companies to identify emissions hotspots, collaborate with suppliers, and engage customers in reducing Scope 3 emissions. By addressing both upstream and downstream activities, it highlights opportunities for reductions across supply chains and fosters collaboration, transparency, and sustainable practices to lower the environmental footprint. Companies are encouraged to incorporate these insights into product carbon footprint assessments and remain adaptive to updates reflecting evolving regulations and reporting standards.

Key benefits supported by the guidance:

  • Identify Emissions Hotspots: Focus on high-impact areas to prioritize reduction efforts.
  • Collaborate with Suppliers: Partner on effective strategies for lowering emissions.
  • Engage Customers: Promote sustainable practices among downstream partners.
  • Standardized Framework: Ensure consistent and reliable reporting aligned with global standards.
