LCA report

The report unveils the findings of the Manganese Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) research project. Launched in November 2021, the study was developed in collaboration with the consulting company Sphera. It aims to evaluate the life-cycle environmental profile of global manganese product production, providing stakeholders with reliable and representative life cycle data in accordance with ISO 14040/44 standards.

Responding to input from IMnI Members and utilizing production data from 2021 as a reference year, the assessment concentrates on quantifying environmental impacts across the cradle to gate production of Mn ore, Mn alloys, EMD, EMM, and MnSO4 (both agriculture-grade and battery-grade).

The target audience for this study includes IMnI Members, manganese producers, initial and end-users (including steelmakers and producers of precursors for cathode active materials used in rechargeable batteries), legislators, academia, LCA practitioners, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and more.
