The REACH Mn Consortium |
The REACH Mn consortium, a voluntary industry initiative, came into effect on 1 January 2008. The consortium’s objective is to collectively work to fulfil Member’s, or their EU representative’s, obligations under the EU’s REACH regulation. The consortium’s substance list includes metallic Mn and a number of Mn-based substances.
A successful General Assembly meeting was held on 21 February, in London. Over 50 participants representing some 40 organisations heard presentations from Dr Keven Harlow, the Consortium’s Manager, and Jonathan Dale of SafePharm Laboratories. Peter Beaven of BHP Billiton emphasised the resources and time committed to the consortium by its founding members during 2007, those eleven founding members representing a broad coverage of the various Mn industries worldwide; with a collective goal to establish the Consortium with clear agreement and objectives.
Organisations interested in joining the consortium are encouraged to do so before 30 June 2008 after which a late joining fee applies. The REACH Mn Consortium can be contacted directly on email: reach@manganese.org |

Dr Louise Assem has been recruited by IMnI as the new OHES Manager, in replacement of Dr Dalida Chouchi who left IMnI at the end of last year. Louise is a human health toxicologist, who before joining IMnI, worked in research and consultancy at the Institute of Environment and Health, UK. She has experience in conducting evidence-based toxicological hazard reviews for the assessment of the potential risks to human health from exposure to chemicals in the environment and workplace, and in managing the day-to-day running of research projects. Louise has a background in toxicology and chemistry and obtained a PhD in Molecular Environmental Toxicology from the University of Birmingham, UK.
Louise’s time will be split between REACH (75%), where she will be assisting Dr Keven Harlow with the REACH Consortium, with particular focus on helping to oversee the testing programme and providing input on scientific aspects, and OHES (25%), where she will monitor and report on new developments in OHES issues and regulations and take forward and manage current and new OHES projects.
